You Need Poutine Bros

MP3

This is the second half our conversation with artist & developer, Jen Montes. We discuss being multilingual, Puerto Rico, Python, GitHub, and poutine. Jen currently works on the TV show Archer.

We hope you’ve enjoyed this episode with Jen Montes. It’s fairly obvious that we had a good time. Up next, a topical show on privacy.

Look Stupid as You Bang on Things

MP3

Jen Montes currently works on the animated show Archer. She started out as an illustrator and now develops tools to assist the artists & animators. We talk about federating the web, cats, electrical engineering and jazz hands.

  • Jen wanted to join us sooner, however the entire team that creates Archer gets together to watch each episode on Thursday nights.
  • We fall into Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt recaps because we all enjoy the jokes.
  • Illustrators build Archer characters in Adobe Illustrator and they animate in After Effects.
  • Jen created the video for the arkOS fundraising campaign.
  • In the chat room, Jacob wonders if the people who make Archer also made Frisky Dingo.
  • Adam Reed & Matt Thompson are the minds behind Frisky Dingo, Sealab 2021 and Archer.
  • Chris and Jen have both listened to the Nerdist Writer’s Panel podcast about Archer.
  • Growing up Jen had a rad Tandy computer.
  • Jen learned Electrical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico, was accepted to the Georgia Tech PHD robotics program and built satellites for Boeing. Of course, she never stopped pursuing her creative and artistic passions.
  • Chris recommends Iron Sky because it was not only crowd funded, but crowdsourced.
  • HitRecordTV is another collaborative production.
  • Where is our art collaboration website? Jen imagines a GitHub-like network for artists.
  • We learn that Electrical engineering field is huge.
  • A Tribe Called Quest lied to us about the pronunciation of El Segundo.
  • Jen says she left Boeing because she was only “pushing desks.” Chris relates that the recent TV show Halt and Catch Fire illustrates her point. Be an intern & fetch coffee at IBM or work at a small firm and get your hands dirty writing BIOS.
  • Chris proposes re-scripting Archer as a Spanish soap opera, like it’s creator did with Sealab2021.

Thanks to Jen Montes and her cat for taking time in the evening to gab with us. Stay tuned for the next episode to her more from the artist and developer.

The Centre for Digital Media Part Two

MP3

Chris is on the road interviewing students in the Master of Digital Media program at The Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver. In addition to the school and projects, we discuss how technology has changed the concept of ownership and we collectively miss the days of buying physical media.

  • Armin Mortazavi stuck around from part one as we chatted with Carolyn Fung and Marina Lúcio.

  • Carolyn was part of the True North team which put together 2 interactive experiences for the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

  • Marina and team Maneki Neko developed a game for a company that we cannot disclose. Read more by clicking the team name.

  • Chris wonders if there’s a cheat code to get the Miami Vice speed boat in the museum simulator.

  • Armin shares that there are lots of cell phone cheats in Grand Theft Auto.

  • All three guests discuss the program at the CDM.

  • Collaboration, even between student teams is a huge part of the school. In contrast, Marina shares that her team’s client was on the other side of the world communicating voice-only through Skype.

  • Since Marina never met the voice on the line Armin wonders, could the client be the Inspector Gadget’s nemesis?

  • Carolyn was on the fence about leaving her career path to return to school, but she recommends you do it if you’re thinking about it. Do it in a flash!

  • We discuss how fast technology moves and are curious how many people know what a floppy disk is?

  • Carolyn tells us that there’s a movement of folks who are ant-technology. The documentary Deluged by Data features Camp Grounded where you can disconnect.

  • We discuss the Oculus Rift and substituting a virtual reality for, well reality.

  • Is the touch screen a good interface? It’s not exactly a tool.

  • Armin is a spy and has no fingerprints which made it difficult for him to take the MCAT.

  • Wait what? You can instantly print your iPhone pictures with a device strapped to your phone? Prynt case. Or you can try the Polaroid Zip.

  • Arturo chimes in from the chat room to mention that USB seems to be disappearing as well.

  • Since we don’t own anything, we can’t let people borrow things very easily. Marina tells us about the awkward Steam sharing.

  • XBox One made sharing games difficut but changed their idea after consumers reacted negatively and PS4 made fun of them.

  • Zip disks are evil as discussed on Film Frown.

  • Be sure to check out Armin’s website biasedcat.blogspot.ca for his comics.

  • Carolyn is on LinkedIn and Twitter.

  • Look for Easter eggs in future games created by Marina Lúcio.

  • Once again, the team blogs are True North, Maneki Neko and The Six.

Special thanks to Mark, Josh, Jeannette, Director Dr. Richard Smith and the entire staff at the CDM for making this remote show possible.

The Centre for Digital Media

MP3

As they used to say in the days of radio, this week we’re on a live remote from The Centre for Digital Media in Vancouver. We chat with the students about the unique program and school. These talented individuals share their experience in the amazing Master program, their ridiculously cool projects and future aspirations. Listening to the altruistic men & women in this Master’s program will give you hope for the future.

  • We’re joined by Arushi Nagar, Gandhar Tannu and Armin Mortazavi.
  • More information on this digital media graduate program is available here. The MDM at the CDM is made possible through a partnership with The University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University (SFU), Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD) and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).
  • Gandhar briefly describes the courses & semesters.
  • Gandhar also shares that the school encourages entrepreneurship so students can pitch their own projects to real world investors like on Dragon’s Den or Shark Tank.
  • Arushi mentioned that one of the keys to the school’s success is the diversity of the students. They are from different cultures & different professional disciplines. They are Agile.
  • Our guests really enjoy their approachable and fun professors. They love the staff as well.
  • How are you greeted at the school? By “a giant Pac-Man” Armin tells us.
  • There’s a lot of game development happening at the school, so naturally they have game systems from Intellivision and Atari 2600 to the current generation of XBox One and PS4.
  • Even if game design is not their focus, each of our guests enjoyed the game design class taught by Dr. Kimberly Voll.
  • Gandhar was part of the Out of the Box team during the semester. The client he was working with was founded by former CDM students.
  • When Chris watched the demo of the Magic Box he was reminded of Sega’s Time Traveler Hologame from the 90s.
  • There are past graduates at EA, Microsoft, Google, CapCom, Apple, and many others.
  • 12 companies have come out of the school in 6 years!
  • Project team Eagle Eye included our guest Arushi and they were working on a marketing automation campaign for the ad agency Elevator Strategy.
  • Armin was on a team called The Six. Their goal was to create a brain training game. Without breaking the non-disclosure agreement, he describes the project as “similar to Lumosity.”
  • Finding a common interest is a key to a successful team. For example, get off the phone it’s beer Friday!
  • Gandhar was mostly acting as a project manager for the project, but he does write on his site, gandharwrites.com.
  • While Arushi hopes to find work at an augmented reality agency and Gandhar wants to create his own startup, Armin would like to teach science through his art.

Special thanks to Mark, Josh, Jeannette, Director Dr. Richard Smith and the entire staff at the CDM for making this remote show possible.

Welcome to part two of the conversation with Alan Henry of Lifehacker. He shares some kitchen advice and his joy of traveling to various Gawker Media hubs. You’ll learn that anime has a flavor for everyone and Spider-Man has a giant mech.

Paul & Chris were delighted to chat with Alan and thankful he could join them. You can find Alan Henry on twitter, or of course on Lifehacker.com.
